SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. SSL works by virtue of a two-way handshake. All websites are issued a certificate that state that the owner of that website truly is the owner and not someone else. A web browser that a customer is using looks up this certificate to make sure that it is valid, and then sends data encrypted to the server. If the certificate does not match, the web browser will display a warning that the website may not be secure. SSL is an important piece of technology that ensures privacy and protection on the internet.
